Amy Marion is an accomplished criminal defense lawyer and civil litigator with 22 years of experience in both the federal and state courts. Ms. Marion has tried to verdict a multitude of felony cases including homicide and narcotics cases. Ms. Marion has led complex civil rights litigation involving malicious prosecution, false arrest, and excessive force cases. She also successfully litigated employment discrimination cases against New York City, the New York City Police Department, The Daily News, and Citibank.
Ms. Marion began her legal career with the Criminal Defense Division of the New York City Legal Aid Society representing indigent defendants. Her courtroom successes were so notable that she was chosen from among all of the public defenders in New York City to be featured on a Court TV documentary entitled “The Public Defender.”
In 1997, Ms. Marion entered private practice where she built her reputation in federal court as a formidable civil rights litigator. In a case which was featured in The New York Times, Singh, Oviawe, et al. v. Union County, et al., Ms. Marion was lead trial counsel winning a settlement in excess of a million dollars for the brutal treatment of individuals being held in an INS detention center.
In 2005, Ms. Marion became Principal Law Clerk to the Honorable Tammy S. Robbins, Nassau County Court Judge. She managed all the cases pending before Judge Robbins who presided in Nassau County Supreme Court, County Court, Family Court and the Domestic Violence Court. Ms. Marion has an insider’s perspective of the court system and a seasoned litigator’s understanding of trials from working in the “trenches” as a public defender and civil rights lawyer. This diverse background provides clients the depth of experience needed to acquire the optimum plea or settlement or prevail at a contentious trial.
Considering a judicial career, Ms. Marion sought and received the Nassau County Bar Association’s highest qualification to serve as a Judge in Nassau County, but she chose to return to litigation to defend the principles of civil rights and liberty.
Ms. Marion is a member of the American Civil Liberties Union, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the New York Democratic Lawyers Council, the Nassau County Criminal Courts Bar Association, and New York League of Conservation Voters. She is an active member of the Nassau County Democratic Party. She is a Nassau County Democratic Committee person and a member of the Nassau County Bar Association. Her volunteer work extends to all areas of her community. Ms. Marion is an Executive Board Member for North Country Reform Temple. She has served as a parent advocate for the Committee on Special Education for the North Shore School District. She has served as a liaison between the Sea Cliff Elementary School Parent Children Association and the North Shore School Board, as a member of the School District’s Ten-Year Curriculum Planning Committee and the School District’s Diversity Committee. She is a tireless volunteer for all community activities and events.
Ms. Marion received her Juris Doctorate in 1988 from Hofstra University School of Law, and was awarded the Inns of Court Scholarship. In 1984, she received her Bachelor of Arts in the specialized Social Thought and Political Economics program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst Massachusetts.
Ms. Marion’s practice includes federal and state criminal defense, white-collar defense, and civil rights litigation. She serves as an attorney in the firm’s Criminal & White Collar Defense Group and in its Trial & Appellate Practice Group.
