Forewarned . . . Disability Insurance Trap

November 15, 1999

Some insurers are denying coverage under long-term-disability policies on the basis of a Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) conducted by physical therapists.

FCE tests are designed to simulate the demands on a person's body by requiring him/her to perform physically demanding, repetitive and stressful activities. But FCEs are unreliable.

Self-defense: Be sure your policy only requires examination by physicians and does not mention FCEs. Insist that the insurer adhere to the policy.
